Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of mother's five-factor personalities, parenting stress, and marital satisfaction on mother-child interactions. The subjects in this study were 360 mothers with children less than 36 months at the eleven childcare centers located in the cities of Daejeon and Cheongju in Korea. The testing of the path model was conducted using the AMOS 7.0 software package. It was found that personalities of openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism had direct effects on the levels of sensitivity and responsivity in mother¡¯s interaction with children. The level of emotionality in the interaction with children was influenced directly by personalities of openness, extroversion, and neuroticism. However, the personality of agreeableness had no effect on mother-child interaction. Second, personalities of conscientiousness, agreeableness, and neuroticism had direct effects on parenting stress, whereas marital satisfaction was affected by personalities of extroversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Third, mothers' parenting stress had a direct effect on marital satisfaction, though it had no effect on mother-child interaction. The parenting stress had a mediating effect in the relationship between mothers' personalities and mother-child interactions. Fourth, marital satisfaction had both direct and indirect effects on the emotionality in the mother-child interaction, and these effects were mediated by parenting stress. The results of this study can be applied to educational and counseling programs for mothers with infants and toddlers. Future research needs to investigate the dynamics of personalities parenting stress and marital satisfaction, and the interaction with child among fathers.
